Somewhere

Somewhere in my mind there is a resting place
Where solitude and peace hide evil’s face
A haven of rest where their is no fear
There are no cries or screams for me to hear

I haven’t found this heaven yet
Nor even come close to being able to forget
The faces, the sounds, the smells, the friends
Of a war that is seemingly without end.

I search and search within my soul
I seek the courage to separate and disown
The feelings, the hurt, and anguish inside
But there is no place, No where to hide

In my own way I continue to be free
And though peace of mind remains to be seen
My calling is to keep the memories alive
So that both the living and the dead survive

If freedom means abandoning my fallen brothers
To disregard their sacrifice and the suffering of others,
such as some of our past generations have been able to do
Let my spirit remain broken, but let my heart remain true.

I have to seek and search my soul within
If I as a Vietnam Veteran forget, who wins?
’Tis my Honor to remember my Brothers on high,
To continue to soar, where even Eagles, dare not fly.
